All the Water We Have

Imagine waking up one morning and having the first thought pass through your mind be whether or not you have enough water to bath with that day. Imagine if you can, a life where you have to ration out sips of water no matter how swollen your tongue may be from dehydration and thirst. For a third time, Imagine within that same world, having to look at your family and explain to them why there isn’t enough food in the house, or how unprecedented drought has created a shortage of quality food. It’s a bleak future to think about, but a reality we will one day have to face if we don’t start thinking about what we do with our water. A reality that even a coastal region like South Carolina can suffer according to the U.S. Draught Monitor (http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Home/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?SC).

Although Columbia may be unaffected at the moment, some surrounding areas in South Carolina have not been so lucky. Although the effects were mild in nature, they should be enough to cause concern and motivate action in reducing the amount of water we use. If these issues are left to worsen, the CDC lists issues such as disease, lack of quality foods, lack of air quality and economic turmoil could ensue (http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/drought/ ). If your home is your castle, then think of your community as your kingdom. You have the power to protect it through conservation.

South Carolina’s Golfing Tradition

South Carolina’s Golfing Tradition

The glint of metal sparks in the sun as the club dives like a bird in flight. Anticipation rises with the uncertainty of what is to come next until a gentle click signals that it’s all in the hands of the Golfing Gods now. The ball thrusts towards the heavens, almost appearing to have disappeared into the sun. In a matter of moments the ball returns and floats down, gently hitting the beautiful green mass that sprawls for miles. This is not just a sport, for many South Carolinians this is a proud heritage, a lifestyle and in some cases, even a family tradition.

For over a century, Carolinians have maintained the dignity of the prestigious sport and upheld its values. The intrinsic value of the sport to many citizens of South Carolina can be found in their outlook on life. The sport seems to transform the players’ perspective on life and fill them with an inner peace. The 380 golf courses that are scattered across South Carolina are some of the most beautiful in the world. There is a reason why movies such as Robert Redford’s “Legend of Bagger Vance” were filmed in the beautiful hills. Nothing speaks Golf more than the vibrant hills and peaceful vibe South Carolina generates.

Communities tend to embody the peaceful essence of the sport and you can be sure that any master planner will make sure that a golf course is always within reach of a community. Take Lake Carolina for example which is built on a lakeside front in Columbia, the proud capital of South Carolina. The community itself captures the spirit of South Carolina and the planners were wise enough to make sure that residents were minutes away from nine different Golf courses. The sport does more than just provide a peaceful retreat for nearby residents. Golf courses help form a better sense of community by offering a peaceful escape. When people come together for some friendly competition on the Golf course, it is hard to feel anything but respect for both the field and the person standing next to you.

Why Columbia Should be your Home

Why Columbia Should be your Home

Known as the “Keystone of the South Atlantic Seaboard”, South Carolina is every bit worthy of the glorious title. Right at its heart lays its central hub and the place where many Americans are hoping to call home, Columbia. With its rich history, beautiful scenery and lively culture, Columbia has become a popular destination for both growth and prosperity. All roads lead in and out of Columbia and there is no end to the marvels inside one of the few capitals worthy of being the center of its state’s attention. Many American’s are looking towards Columbia as being their new home and there are several reasons why you should as well.

The peaceful hills of Columbia aren’t the only thing to look forward to, but the rich community atmosphere and warm social environment will fill you with a sense of belonging. No matter if you’re trying to raise a family, single and looking for a busy social scene or looking at retirement, Columbia will meet your needs and more than exceed your expectations. With a stable environment and a solid school system, children get a shot at being future superstars. As a matter of fact, according to the US Census Bureau, as of 2012 approximately 39.3% of Columbia’s citizens happen to have a bachelor’s degree or higher as opposed to the national average of 28.5% (US Census Buereau, 2014).

The pride of Columbia though would probably have to be its premiere master planned community and winner of community of the year award for over a decade, Lake Carolina. With a different array of houses at affordable prices, it offers a kind of community that is unlike any other with its own shops, services and a close knit group of neighbors. The prices are affordable, but never lack in either substance or feel. It closely represents the spirit of Columbia and restores the belief that the American Dream is still alive and well.

Family life is a big part of life in Columbia, but it would be unfair to say that Columbia didn’t have a lively scene for the younger crowd. Whether it be the wide variety of fun festivals that are a constant theme in Columbia, the popular art galleries that go far out of their way to acquire the most influential pieces of art, or the live music and shows that create a fun atmosphere, younger crowds can expect to have a busy social life. Nightlife is definitely big in Columbia, however for a State that celebrates summer more than any other season, what you can do during the day is even more exciting.

Columbia is less than 3 hours away from Myrtle Beach, making for an excellent weekend getaway. If the beach is not your idea of leisure however, than you might want to turn your attention to the golf courses. South Carolina has a proud history when it comes to the game of golf. Stretches of golf courses can be seen as the sport has an important place in South Carolina’s heritage. In total, the state has approximately 380 golf courses, a golfer’s paradise in more ways than one.

There are various reasons why someone would move to Columbia. Endless reasons why the smart and financially savvy decision would be to invest in a home there, but the question you really have to ask yourself is whether you are living life to its fullest in your current location. America is beautiful and there are many amazing cities, but rarely will you find the kind of charm and hospitality that Colombia has to offer.

3 Reasons to make South Carolina your Home

3 Reasons to make South Carolina your Home

A crisp, invigorating breeze rolls in with the fresh scent of wet soil and freshly cut grass from the neighboring golf course. The sun’s rays glide over open crystal clear waters mirroring the gentle dancing of the towering pines. It is simple to lose yourself to the peaceful majesty that is South Carolina and overlook the fact that making it your home is not only within reach, but it may also be the most lucrative investment you will ever make. You can be sure that SC isn’t just all looks, she’s a state that will sweep you off your feet and for 3 reasons you probably never considered either.

1.) Cost of living –A Wise Investment

It is difficult to believe that owning your personal slice of heaven could be affordable far before retirement, let alone manageable in terms of daily expenses. The truth is that South Carolina’s cost of living happens to be 7.30% lower than the national average. Given the rough economic climate in past years as well as the declining prospects in the job market, it is a telling sign that South Carolina’s unemployment rate rests at 1.3%, lower than the US average. This small difference in unemployment rates might seem insignificant until you factor in that the state has seen a population increase of 15.1% since 2000. It is no wonder that many young professionals as well as family’s looking for a stable environment are looking towards the cost friendliness and smart housing investments South Carolina has to offer. This means financial security, as well as the ability to own a private getaway most people only dream of (Sperling's Best Places, 2013).

2.) Culture and Cuisine -Southern Hospitality

Those that have been privileged enough to make their way to South Carolina and experience the spacious beauty will relate to you how the solid belief in southern hospitality still rings true in this neck of the woods. Your gracious hosts in the south are bound to also treat you to the biggest part of the culture, the food. Whether it be garlic cheese grits with shrimp, Caroline pork twirls or Beaufort stew, your pallet is in for a treat. Fine dining is taken seriously in South Carolina and even grits is an art form. South Carolina has some amazing cuisine, however their world class barbecue is by far their crowning achievement. The South Carolina Barbecue Association (SCBA) holds popular championship cook-offs around the state and the festivals surrounding them offer guests an opportunity to indulge in the finest barbecue you will ever have. It is precisely events like these that have cultivated South Carolinians’ spirit of togetherness and charm (South Carolina Barbecue Association, 2014).

3.) Lifestyle –Taking it Easy

We choose to miss out on far too much of our lives by struggling through the work week, only to stress during our weekends about the challenges to come. We lie to ourselves by saying “it will all pay off in the end”, it is often times only too late that we realize that the present is all that we know for sure. Natives of South Carolina share a lifestyle that understands these concepts all too well. That is why they choose to move at a different rhythm. They take things slowly because they are enjoying life and soaking up every moment. Entire communities such as Columbia’s prestigious Lake Carolina aim at fully embodying the concept of “living”. Of all the reasons to consider moving to South Carolina, lifestyle should be at the top of your list.

Summer Tips for Saving Energy

Winter is a memory and the snow that once blanketed your neighborhood has been replaced with fresh grass that fills the air with the scent of summer. The heat sets in and what was once a welcome change becomes a costly home expense. New home owners in South Carolina have perfected the art of saving money on utilities while staying cool. Using these 7 tips, you will not only enhance your summer experience at a Lake Carolina home, but save money this summer.

1.)    Install Whole House Fans

Installing a whole house fan definitely adds charm to a house, while serving a very practical use. By bringing in cool air and expelling heat, it is definitely a cost effective way to cool your home.

2.)    Seal Your Ducts

Making sure that ducts are efficiently sealed helps save energy, and adds to the safety of your home. Sealing ducts will allow for higher quality airflow, all while saving you money.

3.)    Screens to Reduce the Sunlight

Using screens or bamboo can reduce the amount of sunlight entering a home by 60% to% 80. It’s a fairly easy tactic to reduce costs while adding to the style of your home.

People are often quick to reach for the thermostat, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Open the window and let in a breeze, it’s even better if you’re near a body of water.

5.)    Run Major Appliances after 10pm

People often don’t realize that during peak hours, utilities tend to cost more, and during the summer day, both water and electricity are in high demand. The solution is simple, use major appliances at night to reduce your costs.

6.)    Keep Appliances away from the Thermostat

All appliances generate heat and it is usually a good idea to keep them away from the thermostat. Often times they will cause the thermostat to misread the actual temperature and that can equate to more costs.

7.)    Barbecue

Who says saving money has to be a hassle? One of the ways to minimize both heat within the home as well as keep cool is to have an outdoor cookout.
